Yanam hosted the Indian Volleyball League. This brought many sportsmen, administrators and coaches to Yanam. The event was conducted in the Dr. YSR indoor stadium with its excellent facilities and on the whole the event was conducted very well. But the infrastructural inadequacies of Yanam were also exposed.
There are only a few good hotels. The private sector needs to construct more resorts and hotels. The Yanam administration has to give incentives and attract private investment in the tourism sector. The river front has been beautified and there are also a few cruise boats for a ride in the river. But a lot more needs to be done. A library and also a museum should be built to recapture its past.
Reliance, which has set up its gas terminal at Gadimoga in East Godavari district (near Yanam), has also contributed to the beautification of the river front and is also setting up a replica of Eiffel Tower at Savitrinagar on the Yanam-East Godavari border on the shore.
A park is also being set up there. The project is estimated to cost over Rs 50 crore, shared by Reliance and the Puducherry administration.
More than these attractions, the mangroves near Yanam and in East Godavari district (the Coringa sanctuary) need to be conserved and the fishermen should be educated about their importance.
The Swaminatham Foundation is making an attempt to conserve the remaining mangroves and also for their regeneration.
Liquor is much cheaper here , compared to East Godavari and other parts of Andhra Pradesh due to lower taxes. A sizable number of people are drawn to the place for what the puritans may consider to be a wrong reason.
It is high time for Yanam to outgrow this rakish reputation and be known as an attractive tourist destination.
There is little scope for any further industrial development of Yanam. For a small place, it boasts of one or two major units such as Regency Ceramics and the formulations unit of Reddy Labs and 70-odd small-scale units including rice mills. Because of ever-rising land costs and the limited area, it is difficult to find place for new units. Only environment-friendly tourism should be promoted in Yanam
